MAY’S LICK Matthew James Thompson, 26, passed away Monday, April 3rd, at the University Of Cincinnati Hospital.

He is the son of Ricky and Lisa Thompson and the brother of William Paul Thompson, all of May’s Lick.

Matthew was born February 15, 1991.  He was a graduate of Saint Patrick’s School and attended Northern Kentucky University and Maysville Community and Technical College.  As an educator, he taught mathematics and coached basketball at Millersburg Military Academy.  At the time of his passing, Matthew was employed at Pasquale’s Restaurant.

In addition to his parents and brother, Matthew is survived by his beloved maternal grandmother Marge L. Hargett of Plum Street in Maysville and his aunt Jennifer Jones Isaacs of Carlisle, Kentucky; along with cousins Justin and Gretchen Jones, both of Lexington.  He also leaves behind his faithful canine companion Rastus and a host of family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents James and Elizabeth Thompson of May’s Lick, his maternal grandfathers Everett E. Simms and Bernard C. Hargett, and his uncle Robert Jones.

A star basketball player for the Saint Patrick Saints, Matthew displayed his true character on and off the court as a leader who never overlooked those who surrounded him.  With his drive and determination, Matthew was always a part of a winning team no matter the final score.

Their mutual love of basketball was only a small part of the extraordinarily strong bond shared with Matthew and his brother Will who looked up to him as a champion.  They were the rocks on which each other built their character.  Their supportive parents never missed a game when either son was on the court.  Before taking to the floor, Matthew always stopped to hug his father before the tip-off.

Matthew loved his Granny and Mamaw and Papaw, and cherished the time spent with each of them; particularly when it came to feed him with Sunday dinners at Mamaw’s  house or feasting on Granny’s macaroni and cheese.  These special people helped raise a fine young man with their open hearts and valuable, loving life lessons.  His family knows that Mamaw Thompson was waiting to welcome Matthew home to her warm embrace in heaven as his Granny always was here on earth.

Matthew will be missed by his friends, no matter how casual the acquaintance might have been.  He never met a stranger and always welcomed everyone with a smile that lit up the

world.  This is a reflection of his upbringing by his ever-loving parents who were there to cheer and support him through all the paths of the game of life.

Matthew would not want his friends to grieve in his absence, but would rather them  celebrate and cherish the times spent together; reminding them that every moment of life is precious.  He will continue to hold each one of you in his heart which was always open.

During the time of his passing there have been many loving words and messages of support shared friend-to-friend, and while each memory has been unique, they have all carried the common sentiment that “Matthew had the biggest heart of any person I have ever met.”

“Good night, sweet prince, and may flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.”
