Obituary

Longtime Maysville banker, Gerald Darnell, died on Wednesday, June 25,2025, at his home in Lexington surrounded by his family.  Mr. Darnell was 89 years old.  The cause of death was lung cancer.

Born October 27, 1935 in Fleming County, he was the only child of Ivetta McCord Darnell and Clarence Lamar Darnell.

Mr. Darnell graduated May's Lick High School in 1955.  He joined the Army Reserves in 1956 and served until 1964.

In 1958 began his banking career at The State National Bank.  He started out as an Installment Loan Officer in the days when most transactions were by cash or by check.  He eventually rose to Vice President.

After working at the State National he was hired as a Vice President at The Bank of Maysville.  After a short stint at the Bank of Mayville he was recruited by the Louisville headquartered Cumberland Savings and Loan Bank as the Vice President of their Maysville bank branch.  In his first year with the Cumberland he increased deposits by elevenfold.  He remained with the Cumberland after it was acquired by Fifth/Third Bank.

He retired in 1996 and moved to Las Vegas with his wife Margaret.  They lived there sixteen years before moving to Lexington to be close to their grandchildren.

Mr. Darnell was predeceased by his wife in 2016.  He is survived by his three children, Verona, Gerry and Darrin, seven grandchildren, Leah, Lauren, Airen, Victoria, Bradwick, Gerald and Olivia and twelve great-grandchildren,

He was deeply loved by his family and friends and will be greatly missed.
