Obituary

Stephen Leroy "Steve" Ullery, age 74, of Maysville, Kentucky, passed away on November 27, 2025.

He was born on May 26, 1951, the son of Harold Leroy and Betty Jean Ullery, and grew up in Vandalia (Dayton), Ohio.

Steve was a graduate of Vandalia-Butler High School and went on to earn a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Cincinnati. He dedicated his entire career to the Dayton Power and Light Company, beginning at DP&L Stuart Station in 1972. Over the years, Steve worked across all aspects of power production and earned a respected place in leadership — becoming one of four Unit Managers in 1988 and later Operations Manager East in 1998. In 2008, he transferred to DP&L Killen Station, where he continued his service as Operations Manager. From 2013 to 2015, he served as Killen's Plant Manager before retiring from DP&L in 2016. His dedication, work ethic, and steady presence left a lasting impact on everyone he worked with.

Outside of his career, Steve found joy in many things — sports (especially baseball and softball), traveling, caring for his home, and above all, spending time with his children and grandchildren. He both played and coached baseball and softball, sharing his enthusiasm for the game with many over the years. Steve loved working in his yard and was known for mowing so regularly that the grass barely had time to think about growing. He also had a special affection for dogs, especially his loyal black Labrador, Jaxx, who was his constant companion.

In his younger days, Steve could be found every weekend playing slow pitch softball. He loved the game and played both during the week and on weekends. His stories of teams, teammates, and championships were a source of joy to his sons, and he was particularly proud of the 1979 Quicks Run State Championship team.

Later, Steve coached many Little League baseball teams at the Boys and Girls Club and was frequently selected to lead the all-star teams. His players and teams became some of the best in the area. During most summers, he traveled the state coaching slow pitch softball alongside his great friends Jeff Ormes, Mike Murphy, and Jimmy Brown.

Steve's grandchildren, Peyton and Sydney, were the light of his life, and he took great pride in watching them grow. In retirement, he cherished traveling with his fellow adventurer, Janie, exploring new places, enjoying slow mornings, and spending time outdoors. He was a man of quiet but steady faith and served as a deacon in the Baptist church, always willing to give his time and care to others whenever needed.

Steve is survived by his partner, Janie Hendrickson; his sons, Chris (Caroline) and Zach (Joy-Leilani Garbutt); his grandchildren, Peyton and Sydney; his sister, Cheryl Ridgley; the mother of his sons, Bedouin Dennison; and many loved ones.
