Obituary

Joan Lucille Murphy Comer passed away on Jan. 31, 2023, surrounded by family at Hospice of Hope Care Center in Maysville, Ky. 

 

She was born April 29, 1931, in Maysville, the daughter of William F. and Mary Helen Murphy. She was a graduate of Maysville High School and attended Webster College in Saint Louis, Mo.  

 

Joan was a devoted wife and mother, providing a loving home for her beloved family. When her youngest reached adolescence, she started work at Mason County Schools as a teacher’s aide, supplying motherly love and warm hugs to countless kindergarteners at Straub Elementary School.   

 

Joan was a long-time member of May’s Lick Homemakers Club and an adult 4-H leader. She served on the Mason County Extension Council. She was a long-time parishioner and volunteer at Saint Rose of Lima Catholic Church in May’s Lick. 

 

She is survived by her husband of 69 years, William T. Comer of May’s Lick, Ky.; daughter Louise Gladstone of Lexington, Ky.; son George Comer of Placentia, Calif., his wife Kitty, their children Kristen and Andrew, and Joan’s great-grandson Reece; son Greg Comer of Hartford, Ky., his wife Kay, their children Chris, Laura and David, and Joan’s great-grandchildren Mack, Myles, Tyke, Kynze and Rowan; daughter-in-law Antonia Comer of May’s Lick, Ky., her son Kenton and his wife MaKayla, and Joan’s great-grandson Kenley; son Patrick Comer of Camby, Ind., his wife Julie, their children Bryan, Max and Anna; son Charles Comer of Mount Sterling, Ky., his wife Glenda, their son Kiernan; son Matthew Comer of Maysville, Ky., his wife Eleanor, their children Faith and Hope; and son Nick Comer of Winchester, Ky., his wife Leanna, their children Clay and Emmie; and numerous nieces and nephews. Joan was preceded in death by her beloved son Harold Comer; brothers Dr. Patrick J. Murphy and William F. Murphy II; and sisters Ella Mae Lalley and Margaret Rose Mitchell. 

 

Mass of Christian Burial for Joan Comer will be held Saturday, Feb. 4 at 11 A.M. at Saint Rose of Lima Church in May’s Lick with Rev. Michael Comer and Rev. Phil Devous co-celebrating. Burial will follow in Saint Patrick’s Cemetery in Maysville. Visitation will be 5 to7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3 at Palmer Funeral Home & Crematory in May’s Lick. 

 

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Hope in Maysville; the William T. & Joan Comer Family Scholarship, Kentucky 4-H Foundation, 212 Scovell Hall, Lexington KY 40546; or a charity of your choice.
