Sara Jones Ison of Mt. Sterling died of natural causes on December 31, 2022. She was 88 years old.
Sara is is survived by her sisters Becky Bishop Priest of Mt. Sterling and Jane Hoskins Pyle (Jimmy) of Maysville, her brother Charles Bishop (Catherine) of Versailles, 10 nieces and nephews, their spouses and children and her very special friend and exchange student Beatriz Millán-Rodriquez of Barcelona, Spain. She was preceded in death by her husband Noel Ison and her parents Ruth Jones Hoskins and Earl G. Bishop.
Sara was born on July 17, 1934, in North Middletown. She graduated from North Middletown High School in 1952, and went on to graduate from Columbia College (formerly Christian College) in Columbia, Missouri and Eastern Kentucky University, Richmond.
Sara was a lifelong educator, teaching at Cassidy Elementary in Lexington, Mapleton Elementary and Miller Middle School in Mt. Sterling. With a lifelong interest in music and the arts, she was a charter member of the Montgomery County Arts Council and until the onset of dementia was an active member of The Church of the Ascension (Episcopal), serving on the Altar Guild and as a Sunday School teacher. She was also a member of the Mt. Sterling Rotary Club.
The Burial Liturgy and a celebration of Sara’s life will be at The Church of the Ascension, Mt. Sterling on Saturday, January 7 at 1 pm, followed by a reception in the church’s Parish Hall. Visitation will be at the church Saturday from 11:30 am – 1:00 pm.
